Akagera national park

Created in 1934 the only savannah Wildlife park in Rwanda is located between Coordinates: 01°38'S 30°47'ECoordinates: 01°38'S 30°47'E and covers and approximate Area of 1,122 km2 (433 sq mi) It borders with Tanzania on the east side of the country.

There are 12 species of antelopes including the cute chestnut coated impalas also the most commonly seen, the very small oribi as well as the tsessebe and the secretive bushbucks can be spotted here, in addition to the eland which is the largest antelope.

Groups of about 50 hippos can be seen playing in the shallow waters of Lake Ihema throughout the entire day while crocodile busk in the sun with their huge threatening jaws out. The silence of this wilderness is spiced by the enchanting fish eagles.

The shores of Lake Ihema are crowded with one of the biggest flock of water birds in Africa, and the nearby swamps are home to the beautiful papyrus gonolek, as well as prehistoric shoebill stork one of the most sought after bird species on an African safari.
